Water Outage – City of Boyd

Posted on February 18, 2021

On February 16, 2021 at about 6:00 am, a large water line in the Meadow Park section of town ruptured. This caused a significant loss of stored water from our storage tanks. As our public works personnel repaired the main break in sub-freezing conditions, we began to recover and fill our storage tanks to an acceptable level. On the same date, at 11:00pm, we were notified by Walnut Creek SUD that they were having to turn off our water supply due to them having several power outages throughout their system. The City of Boyd purchases water from WCSUD to supplement our well  capacity. Throughout the evening and into the next morning, we noticed a slight decline in water storage levels and calculated out a complete loss with 48 hours if significant conservation measures were not taken.

We posted conservation request multiple times yesterday February 16, 2021 at 9:30 am. and again at 4:30pm and once again at 5:30 pm.

A number of factors have contributed to this problem, but the bottom line is that the demand on our system has continued to consistently surpass our ability to replenish.

In fact, following our several request for residents to conserve, we saw the pace of use increase rather than diminish. Much of the progress that had been made in refilling our system  has been cut back to square one.
With the average City of Boyd consumption of 225,000 gallons per day, The City of Boyd produces 150,000 of those gallons and we purchase the rest from our supplier. We are now at a 75,000 gallon deficit.
Once our tanks fill to an acceptable level, we must conserve. If we do not, we will be forced back into this same situation. We are in close contact with Walnut Creek SUD and hopefully will be able to draw from them soon. Until that time, we are slowing recovering and filling our tanks. Water outage is expected to be between 36 – 48 hours.
Please understand that we are doing everything humanly possible at this point. We will restore water, when we have water to restore.
Updates will be frequent as they pertain to this outage.
